Mining Webinar Series

The Impact of Mining in the Kuskokwim

Since the Gold Rush, the Kuskokwim region has been the site of small (artisanal) and large scale mines. In 2007, a new open-pit gold mine was proposed. The project was named Donlin Gold and has resulted in many residents of the Kuskokwim being interested in learning more about the impact of mining on the region.

In response, Native Village of Georgetown is organizing a mining webinar series via Zoom to learn about the impacts of mining in the Kuskokwim, with a focus on Donlin Gold.

Supporters and opponents of the mine have been invited to participate, and will be scheduled as/if they confirm their participation. We have invited Donlin Gold, Earthjustice, Calista, The Kuskokwim Corporation, Orutsararmiut Native Council and researchers from the University of Alaska.

We welcome suggestions on additional presenters to invite. Each episode will be an hour long and will feature a different guest who will give a short presentation followed by a question and answer period. All episodes will be on Zoom. All are invited to participate in the live webinar.

Each episode will be recorded on Zoom, and shared on this website.

The Native Village of Georgetown is organizing the webinar series for informational purposes. The Native Village of Georgetown has not taken a position on Donlin Gold.
